BUNDARRA: Record Day For The Girls

3 minute read

Bundarra Jockey Club in north west NSW will stake a claim to an unofficial Australian-first after female trainers and jockeys completely dominated the club's once-a-year cup meeting on November 27.

The all-girls brigade – spearheaded by trainer Jane Clement and jockey Teresa Nikora who collared a winning treble – won every race on the five-race card to give the Bundarra club what may be a unique piece of Australian racing history.

Clement and Nikora won the Bundarra Cup with Dubai Jim as well as minor races with Pure Carlsburg and Dashaheart while Debbie Wilson and Rachael Murray combined to win with Stonefly.

Cathy Brennan and Bree King added to the perfect all-girls scorecard when Adventure Roma led throughout to win over 1000m.

“We all did very well – we're very impressed,” grinned Nikora, whose career-first treble gave her the Bundarra jockeys' challenge as well.

“It's been a great day, and I got a beautiful whip for winning the challenge,” she said.

Available records show that female jockeys rode the card at Wondai in Queensland in 1990 and that Kim Arnold, Vanessa Hutchinson, Maree Payne and Christine Puls equaled the feat at Murtoa, Victoria in 1995.

But females also training all the winners is possibly an Australian first.

Bundarra Jockey Club secretary Doc Layton said the meeting – postponed from its original October long weekend date – was a success.

“A postponed meeting is never as good as the original date, but we had a fair crowd and we were quite happy with it and we were dominated by the ladies, which was good,” he said.
