Our Lukas has already won two Ipswich Cups but trainer Robert Heathcote couldn't be less confident going into this year's race.

In 2009 Our Lukas led throughout to score his first success in the race, then last year overcame a wide gate with the late Stathi Katsidis in the saddle to win again.

But since a slashing second-up run in the Listed Winning Edge Handicap, when beaten a head by Scenic Shot, Our Lukas' form has been indifferent with three average efforts.

The latest was a five length 11th in the Listed Strawberry Road Handicap when failing to come on.

“It's going to be tough,” Heathcote said. “It's plain to see he's down on his form compared to his previous two Ipswich Cup wins.

“And for no apparent reason. We've done lots of tests and his trackwork has been sensational. He looks great and seems to be in great spirits but he's just not racing with the same enthusiasm and zest of the last couple of years.

“We're going into the race hopeful. He's got a good barrier. It's essential Shane gets him to jump and run and if he can be up on the speed and recover some of his old form we know he can be competitive.”

Following his last two Ipswich Cup wins Our Lukas has contested the longer Caloundra Cup but has been well held each time.

Heathcote said the horse just doesn't run the longer trip and will spell win lose or draw after tomorrow's race.

“He'll go to the paddock. We've had a couple of cracks at the Caloundra Cup and I think he's a 2000m horse to be honest. His successes at Ipswich have been because it's a smaller circumference track.”

Following his spell Our Lukas is likely to return to Victoria for the spring carnival where he will be aimed at the country cups.

Last year he won the Listed Seymour Cup over a mile.
