ALBURY: Comeback Winner For Norm Loy

3 minute read

Albury jockey Norm Loy capped a remarkable comeback to the saddle when he rode his first winner in nearly eight years at Berrigan on August 27.

Loy's victory on Wingardium Leviosa for Albury-trainer Rob Wellington was his first since the 41-year-old shed almost a third of his body weight to resume his career as a jockey after several years as a successful trainer.

Loy was having only his fifth ride since retiring in 2004 and was overwhelmed by the congratulations.

“It's very humbling the number of people who have congratulated me on riding my first winner back,” Loy told the Albury Border Mail.

“They really appreciate how much work and the sacrifices I have made to make a comeback.

“While it was only a maiden at Berrigan it was overwhelming the number of people who were so happy for me.

“Even all the jockeys back in the change rooms congratulated me and I am appreciative of all the support they have given me.”

Loy was also quick to pay tribute to his good mate and supporter Chris Maclean, a fofmer leading Albury bookmaker and sporting figure, who was tragically killed in a car accident near Barooga on August 14.

“I couldn't help but think of Chris who was a really good mate of mine,” he said.

“I'm sure he would have been the first person to congratulate me because he has been a big supporter of mine and a really good friend.”

Wingardium Leviosa broke through for his first victory at his fourth start.

“I think he will go on and win better races,” he said.

“He finished the race off real well and was fairly impressive. He did it in style.”
