BONG BONG: Amateur Riders Dismiss Strike Action

3 minute read

The famous Bong Bong picnic race meeting on Wednesday will not be a victim of any strike action by jockeys.

Racing NSW has been advised by the amateur riders participating at the Bong Bong Cup meeting that the program will proceed without disruption despite suggestions that strike action by jockeys seeking an increase to their riding fees is pending.

“Our stewards have contacted all the riders that have engagements at the meeting and each has given their assurance that they intend to fulfil their obligations.

"We can only take them to be true to their word,” said Racing NSW CEO Peter V'landys.

“In good faith, we had already given the amateur riders an increase of 12.5% to their riding fees when the matter was brought to my attention last week and that will be reviewed again early next year.

“The Bong Bong Cup meeting is one of our most popular picnic race meetings in a unique setting and we are confident that the people of the Southern Highlands and surrounds will be able to enjoy a great day's racing,” V'landys said.
