Guineas plan for Bombalatomba

3 minute read

Lightly raced three-year-old Bombalatomba is on track for the Australian Guineas after landing a betting plunge at Sandown.

Trainer Chris Hyland is looking to chance his hand with Bombalatomba in the Australian Guineas after the three-year-old landed a betting plunge at Sandown.

Backed from $9.50 to $6, Bombalatomba posted his second win in six starts when he stormed home from near last to land the Hilton Manufacturing Handicap (1400m).

The son of Fast 'n' Famous cost Hyland $NZ40,000 in New Zealand but had niggling injuries early on and had been a slow maturer.

"The guys who own him have been patient and got the rewards today," Hyland said.

"He's not a fantastic track worker but he turns up on the day and has a crack."

Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Bombalatomba scored a half neck win over Westchester ($18), who also ran on strongly from back in the field, and Henwood ($5.50).

Favourite Instalment ($3.80) compounded after leading and finished 10th.

Hyland said he was keen to test Bombalatomba against the better three-year-olds in the coming weeks.

"We will probably go for gold," Hyland said.

He said the Group Three C S Hayes Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on February 18 would be his next start.

"He is also paid up for the Australian Guineas (on March 3) and as we have always had a good opinion of him we will probably stay on that path," Hyland said.

Think. Is this a bet you really want to place?
