Tougher Rivals For Geegees Blackflash

3 minute read

Interstate trainers have rallied to ensure Tasmanian star Geegees Blackflash will face tougher opposition when he attempts to complete the Hobart Cup-Launceston Cup double at Mowbray on February 29.

Geegees Blackflash dispensed with five interstate stayers among the nine rivals he beat in the G3 Hobart Cup (2200m) at Elwick on February 12 to record his fifth successive win and remain unbeaten in Tasmania this season.

However there is greater depth in the 26 nominations for the $225,000 AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m) with entries from Peter Moody, Darren Weir, Tony Vasil, Colin Little, Colin and Cindy Alderson and Mike Moroney.

Moody has nominated Sidecar, Weir's entries are The Night's Hot and last start winner Keep Control while Little has entered Tanah Lot and The Southern.

Team Alderson has a strong hand with Montgomery and Mornington Cup placegetter Sea Galleon, Vasil has nominated Apprehend and Moroney is persevering with Viking Hero after his gallant second to Geegees Blackflash in the Hobart Cup.

Locals who will take their chances include Troy Blacker's Hobart Cup placegetter Dream Flyer and last season's Tasmanian Horse of the Year Dream Pedlar.

Other Hobart Cup runners nominated include Fieldmaster (Patrick Payne), Placement (Danny O'Brien) and the Kiwi stayer Roi D'Jeu (Shaune Ritchie). A second entry from NZ is the Kevin Myer-trained Titch.

The notable omission among Tasmanian entries is last Wednesday's Mornington Cup winner Norsqui, trained by Walter McShane.

McShane took Norsqui to Victoria because he didn't think his stayer could beat Geegees Blackflash in the Hobart or Launceston Cups and he is now aiming for next month's Adelaide Cup over 3200m.

Norsqui has been placed in the Andrew Ramsden and Sandown Cup and he also won over 2800m at Flemnington.

Geegees Blackflash is to be spelled after he runs in the Launceston Cup.
