Big Kiwi Contingent Arrives For Carnival

3 minute read

A charter flight carrying 25 New Zealand horses has arrived in Brisbane for this year's Queensland racing carnival.

Among the big Kiwi contingent is star filly Artistic, the last start NZ Oaks winner who has the Queensland Oaks in June as her Brisbane target.

Artistic's connections have taken up the new 'Australasian Challenge' initiative which was launched this year to attract the best horses from Australasia to the Brisbane for the carnival.

Artistic, trained by Shaune Ritchie, will be stabled at the Gold Coast during her Queensland stay and is set to open her campaign on Saturday in the Gold Coast Bracelet with Chris Munce as her rider.

Also on the flight was the Queensland Derby contender Malandrino, the Matamata Classic winner trained by Murray Baker.

Boom Kiwi jockey James McDonald is booked to ride Malandrino through his Queensland campaign that will include the Rough Habit Plate and Queensland Derby.

In another major riding engagement Singapore-based Opie Bosson has been engaged to ride the Alan Sharrock-trained triple G1 winner Shez Sinsational in her Queensland campaign starting with Saturday's $200,000 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast.

Bosson will also make trips from Singapore to ride the mare in the $500,000 Doomben Cup on May 19 and the $250,000 Eagle Farm Cup on June 2.

Bosson rode Shez Sinsational in three wins and three placings last year in NZ as well as in Brisbane when she was placed in the Queensland Oaks and Derby.

This year she has won the G1 Zabeel Classic at Ellerslie, G1 International Stakes at Te Rapa and G1 Auckland Cup at Ellerslie and resumed from at Tauranga last week to win fresh up over 1400m.
