ALICE SPRINGS: Broome Next For Cup Winner Granzig

3 minute read

South Australian veteran Granzig is set to travel much farther afield to Broome after winning last Monday's Alice Springs Cup.

Trainer Mick Whittle plans to take the 10-year-old veteran of 115 starts to Western Australia for the Broome Cup in August after his successful trip to the Red Centre to win a second Alice Springs Cup.

Granzig belied his years by beating the track record for 2000m set by Zylvester in the 2006 Alice Springs Cup.

He also became the first horse since Lothaway County in 1995 to win a second Alice Springs Cup, some 24 months after his previous success in 2010.

Whittle rated Granzig's Alice Springs victory as a special result as the horse was destined for a future over the jumps before the Strathalbyn trainer bought him with the outback cups in mind.

Top Adelaide rider Dominic Tourneur added to his love affair with Alice Springs when he won last Monday's feature at Pioneer Park on Granzig .

It was the fifth Alice Springs Cup win in seven years for the Mauritian jockey and gave him the honour of being the first rider to win the race five times.
