Lady Melksham has Bletchingly in sights

3 minute read

Next month's Group Three Bletchingly Stakes has emerged as an option for unbeaten filly Lady Melksham who will back up in the Creswick Stakes at Flemington.

Unbeaten filly Lady Melksham could have a planned spring break postponed and she could be a surprise contender in feature sprints at the end of next month.

The John Sadler-trained three-year-old will back up in this week's Listed Creswick Stakes (1200m) at Flemington but the stable is already looking at bigger short-term targets.

After scoring her third win, untested by five lengths at Sandown last Saturday, Sadler is rethinking plans to spell Lady Melksham after the Creswick.

"We haven't set that (giving her a spell) in concrete just yet," said Malua Racing's general manger Troy Corstens.

"There is a possibility we might just give her a quick freshen and have a go for one of two sprints in a couple of months."

Corstens said the Group Three Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on July 28 was among the options.

Lady Melksham looks a potential star and continues to improve with every run.

She was a long neck winner at her race debut at Sale on April 29 and fell in when she narrowly beat Reigning Lass at Sandown on May 16 before trouncing that filly last Saturday.

Jockey Glen Boss said Lady Melksham did it so easily last start that she could have won by 15 lengths if he'd let her go.

"She had a pretty easy time of it on Saturday," Corstens said. "She looks pretty good.

"We were keen to see how she pulled up and she came through the run really well so at this stage we will be accepting with her for Saturday.

"It looks a nice race for her and hopefully she can get some black type."

Lady Melksham is among 20 entries for the Creswick which also includes last-start Caulfield winner Zamorar, who last spring was fourth to Sepoy in the Group One Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington.

Adelaide Guineas winner Riziz along with other stakes-performed three-year-olds Arctic Flight, Grand Britannia and Pakari Toa are also entered.

Corstens said Lady Melksham's stablemate Houston Benefactor was nominated for the Creswick but instead would run in the Hilton Nicholas Handicap (1400m).
