Canberra trainer Gratz Vella is hoping that extra muscle will see the gelding record back to back wins at the Sapphjre Coast on SUnday in the Merimbula Jazz Festival Cup (1200m).

You're Canny won his first race since his juvenile days when he defeated Shoot Thru Blu over 1200m at Canberra on May 25.

The run followed a “mystery” performance first up according to Vella at Hawkesbury on May 5.

“I don't know what happened at Hawkesbury,” Vella said. “He'd won a trial and I thought he'd run good.

“His win at Canberra was tops. He was three and four wide but shot away from them and went to the post good and pulled up enormous.”

Vella paid $40,000 for the son of Canny Lad at the Classic yearling sales in Sydney.

“He always showed something special but what he did as a two-year-old surprised all of us,” Vella said.

'“We didn't expect him to do what he did.”

You're Canny has won four from nine and has returned $263,160 prizemoney thanks to his Black Opal win when he upset boom filly Karuta Queen.

As a juvenile Vella said the gelding was “all legs and no body.

“I reckon since his two-year-old days he's put on 90 to 100 kilos. He's a big solid horse now, standing nearly 17 hands," he said.

“His rump is still higher than his wither. I think the growth spurt when he turned three was the reason he didn't fire early.”

Vella had You're Canny nominated for Canterbury on Wednesday but when the gelding received too much weight he plumped for the Sapphire Coast.
