Pear Tart wins Tatts Tiara

3 minute read

Patinack Farm have ended the Group 1 racing season in fine style with their three-year-old filly Pear Tart taking out the Tattersall's Tiara (1400m) at Eagle Farm.

The daughter of Dehere was always prominent under jockey Jeff Lloyd with Red Tracer taking up the running from the outset in the big field of eighteen.

Pear Tart was travelling like the winner approaching the final 200m and quickened up nicely when asked to put the race away, going on to score by a neck from Skyerush who managed to sneak home along the fence into second and Gai's Choice back in third. Red Tracer battled on bravely to finish fourth.

Stradbroke winner Mid Summer Music worked to the line nicely but, along with other well-supported fillies Shopaholic and Soft Sand, she was always a long way back and never really threatened.

Formerly the Winter Stakes, the Tattersall's Tiara was upgraded to Group 1 status in 2007 and is the final Group 1 on the Australian racing calendar, but it was a first for the season for Patinack Farm and trainer John Thompson.

Thompson was clearly thrilled to see the last start winner of the Group 2 Queensland Guineas, Pear Tart, add a win at the top level to her C.V.

“Very good, very happy”, said Thompson. “It's nice to get a Group 1 to finish off the year”.

“He got her out into a good spot. We drew wide again but she is a filly that makes her own luck.

“He sat outside the leader like he did last time and full credit to the horse, she beat the older horses today and did it in dominant fashion”.

A float incident which left Pear Tart requiring multiple stiches to a nasty cut to her head had threatened to end her campaign but her form in two runs since is a credit to Thompson and his team.

“She'd done so well [following the win in the Guineas] and as everybody knew she'd had an ordinary run in to that race with the injury”, said Thompson.

“But she did very well and the three weeks into today was perfect for her.

“She's not just a wet-tracker, she's just a good filly”.

Thompson indicated that the paddock would be the next stop for Pear Tart before a trip to Melbourne for the spring with races such as the Myer Classic on her radar.
