3 minute read

Coonabarabran Jockey Club and the Narromine-trained Spectacular Iam were the major winners at the Western Racing Association racing awards presented in Gilgandra on August 25.

The CJC was judged WRA TAB Club and WRA Club of the Year among the 25 clubs that make up the WRA.

Cobar Miners Race Club won the Community Club award and Tottenham Picnic Race Club won the picnic club award.

The popular grey gelding Spectacular Iam, trained at Narromine by Kylie Kennedy, was named Horse of the Year for 2011-12 after a fine season that saw him win six open company races.

The leading WRA jockey was Greg Ryan, leading apprentice Hannah Martin and leading approved rider Stuart Brown. The joint winners of the trainers premiership were George Wright (Parkes) and Brett Thompson (Mudgee).

Veteran racecaller Bob Foran was a popular winner of the WRA Special Achievement Award.

Foran has been a race caller in the region since 1951 and called the Gilgandra meeting last Saturday.

He has also been a successful trainer and a steward at various times during his racing career.
