Michelle Payne has been taken to hospital after falling heavily in the first race at Ararat on Friday.

Payne is believed to have suffered concussion, facial lacerations and a back injury.

The Group 1 winning jockey only returned to the saddle last month after sustaining a serious back injury in a race fall in May.

This afternoon’s fall has cost Payne her ride aboard Yosei in Saturday’s Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.
