TAMWORTH: The Power Of The Internet

3 minute read

Tamworth trainer Leon Davies landed a third successive Coonamble Cup on Sunday with a horse he received thanks to the power of the internet.

Davies completed a Coonamble Cup hat trick with Clever Hans to go with his previous wins in the race with Prussian Secret in 2010 and Altonio in 2011.

The six-year-old Clever Hans was previously trained in southern NSW and came to Davies sight unseen after his Sydney based owner Michael Athanasiou saw his website on the internet.

"We had never met. He found my details on my website and sent me Clever Hans," Davies said.

"He's been in good form since he came to me. He deserved the win as he has run second in the South Grafton Cup, the Coffs Harbour Cup and the Moree Cup for me and was third in the Dubbo Cup.

"It was nice to win three in a row."

The Coonamble Cup was the first win by Clever Hans in eight starts for Davies after three seconds, a third and three fourths.

The Viscount gelding has now won eight races and more than $185,000 in his 40 career starts.

It was a big day for Davies at Coonamble as he also won the support Baradine Cup with Twin Zero, another newcomer to his stable who was having his first start under his care.

Veteran sprinter Spectacular Iam from the Kylie Kennedy stable at Narromine broke the track record winning the feature sprint over 1100m.

A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of life membership by the Coonamble Jockey Club to veteran local trainer John Lundholm.

* It was third time lucky for Armidale trainer Lea Selby on Saturday when she emulated her father by winning the Bundarra Cup with her nine-year-old veteran Rhodonite.

Selby had made two previous attempts to win the Bundarra Cup with Rhodonite without luck.

He fell in the race in 2010 race and last year the race was abandoned due to bad weather.

Her ambition to win the race was driven by her father Ike Brazel, who trained Dynamitre Dan to win a Bundarra Cup 25 years ago.

“I was a kid at the time. I was his stablehand,” Selby recalled.
