COONABARABRAN: Crockett Sure He Can Win The Cup

3 minute read

Young trainer Cameron Crockett hopes Are You Sure can live up to his potential when he lines up in the $40,000 Coonabarabran Cup on Monday.

Are You Sure finished sixth behind Snitsky on the Randwick Kensington track at his latest start in what has turned out to be a strong form race for a country race like the Coonabarabran Cup over 1600m.

Snitsky won again at Randwick on Saturday, while Future Shock, who finished fourth just ahead of Are You Sure, ran second at Canterbury last week.

Crockett said Are You Sure’s effort was better considering the inside section of the track was, in his option, not as good as the outside that day.

“It was a big run considering what some of the others in front of him have done since,” he said.

“He shocked me a bit first-up when he won because he wasn’t fully wound up and he has gone on since then.”

Crockett, the son of top Mudgee horseman Max Crockett, has only been training for 12 months and already has six winners to his credit from 20 starters.

“It’s been good so far. This is my first runner in the Coonabarabran Cup so I’m hoping he can run as well as he has been,” Crockett said.

“He has trained on well and it doesn’t look an overly strong race.

“I was going to start him in another race, but the Cup didn’t look beyond him so I put him in.”

Are You Sure hasn’t done a lot of racing for a five-year-old with four wins from 11 starts.

Crockett said Are You Sure was always a bit behind after having troubles as an early foal.

“There were complications with him and really to look at he is like a three-year-old,” he said.

“I treat him exactly like that and I think he will keep getting better.”

The 26-year-old has engaged leading county rider Greg Ryan for Are You Sure.

Ryan won last year’s Cup on Granite Bluff.
