MUSWELLBROOK: Cup Will Be A Snip For Bennett

3 minute read

This time last year Scone trainer Greg Bennett was confident race favourite Kaypers could win the $60,000 Muswellbrook Cup.

However, following a dispute between the owners, the gelding was scratched on race morning to run at Rosehill the following Saturday.

“There was a disagreement between the two owners, one got his way and he raced at Rosehill where he finished a nice fifth and picked up $1000,” Bennett recalled.

“He would have won the Muswellbrook cup which was worth over $35,000. Hopefully we can make amends this year.”

Bennett will saddle up Clickety Snip (Robert Thompson) and Oh My Papa (Courtney Van Der Werf) in the Muswellbrook Cup.

"Clickety Snip is the better of my two but Oh My Papa will run a cheeky race,” Bennett concluded.

Clickety Snip has been in dynamic form, being unbeaten in two runs this preparation and a winner of six from 10 starts.

The gelding was initially with Robert Price at Nowra.

“He’s won six from seven for me. I got lucky,” Bennett said.

Clickety Snip resumed from a 152-day spell to record a storming win over 1200m at Tamworth on September 24.

The four-year-old then motored home to score a nose win over Prior Baron and Double Halo to win the South Muswellbrook Cup (1450m) with Greg Ryan in the saddle.

Robert Thompson, who was aboard at Tamworth, takes the reins in Tuesday's 1600m feature.

“He’s in good shape,” Bennett said of Clickety Snip.

“He looks great and has improved since the South Muswellbrook Cup when we left our run late but they don’t pay on margins, only winners.

“First up at Tamworth he’d only had the one trial and I wasn’t confident he could win, he was underdone, but he got the job done.

“I gave him an easy week after that to keep the speed in his legs and he won well again at Muswellbrook.”

Bennett added there are “bigger fish to fry” looking ahead to Clickety Snip’s future program with his distance range likely to be stepped up to 1600m to 1800m in Sydney.
