Darwin based jockey Carl Spry will kick off his brief riding stint for the Paul Jones and Barbara Joseph Stable on Saturday when he rides Back To Zero in the Adaminaby Cup.
Not seen at the races since riding at Darwin on Melbourne Cup day, Spry looks set to make a winning return having secured a full book of rides for the non-tab meeting.
Interestingly, his relocation to Canberra earlier this week was only out of sheer luck as Spry just so happened to be in the right place at the right time.
"He ran into Mum up in Darwin and said he was looking for a change in scenery," Jones said.
"At the time we were looking for track work riders so we were more than happy for him to come down and have a look around."
With a career winning strike rate of just over 10 per cent, Spry has proven himself as a handy jockey all over Australia with Jones confident he will prove quite successful in Canberra.
"A t the moment he's looking to spend a couple of months down here, not sure how long at this stage," Jones said.
"He's been a fringe provincial rider in Brisbane for a while now and I definitely think he will settle in well here."
Starting work with his new stable on Tuesday, Jones said he looks forward to saddling up Spry in the coming weeks.
"He's been here since Tuesday and has ridden a few horses for us in track work and he's having his first ride for us in the Adaminaby Cup," Jones said.
"He's engaged to ride two of our three runners on Sunday so fingers crossed he can kick it off on a winning note.
"I really think during his brief stint with us that people are going to really find out how good of a rider [Carl Spry] he is."
