Book Can Save Historic Grandstand

3 minute read

Racegoers attending the Camperdown Cup meeting in Victoria’s western districts on Saturday have the added attraction of helping save a piece of racing history.

Camperdown racecourse has a grandstand that was built 110 years ago and is in need of repair.

A group of supporters are stepping in to bring the old stand back to its former glory.

Led by Melbourne medicos Dr John Daffy (son of local training legend Geoff Daffy) and Dr Adam Testro, they have come up with a unique fundraising idea.

The two doctors have moved into publishing and have created a beautiful photographic coffee table book titled ‘Camperdown and its Cup’, capturing the colour and excitement of a day at the Camperdown races.

The imagery was taken at the 2013 Camperdown Cup with the book launched this week to coincide with the 2014 running.

Included are spectacular photos of not just Camperdown racecourse but the historical buildings and properties that stand in the area including the late VRC chairman Sir Chester Manifold’s famous racing establishment ‘Talindert’.

All proceeds from the book’s sales will be donated towards restoration of the 110-year-old heritage listed grandstand at Camperdown racecourse.

"The grandstand is the club's ultimate possession and needs to be saved for future generations; the book should have wide appeal, not only to residents of the western districts, but all supporters of racing,” Daffy said.
