Canny horsemanship from trainer Kristen Buchanan did the trick when Eight Skirts at Wyong on Sunday.

Eight Skirts won the Tuggerah Lakes Maintenance Benchmark 70 (1200m) after Wyong based Buchanan decided to put a tongue tie on the mare and spent several weeks re-educating the horse.

“I did dressage work with her in the centre of the course every day with the tongue tie on and while her manners are still not brilliant she is a lot better than she used to be,” Buchanan said.

She put the tongue tie on after Eight Skirts ran last at Canterbury last month.

“She had a tongue control bit on in that race and hated it,” Buchanan said. “There was no point persevering with it so I had no option but to put a tongue tie on.”

Buchanan intends returning to Sydney with Eight Skirts.

“Despite what happened last start I think she is a city class mare,” Buchanan said.

• THE ultimate indignity worked when the Peter Snowden trained Tumult came from last to win the NSW Parliament Former Members Maiden Cup (1100m).

The three year old was gelded after being unplaced at Flemington and Gosford. He was also scoped twice for a suspected breathing problem.

“The scoping found nothing amiss and because he is a big horse the decision was made to geld him and it worked,” foreman Brad Widdup, said.

“It is good to give him time because he is a lovely horse and could develop into a city class galloper.”

• Joe Pride will head to a mid week meeting at Canterbury with Mesmereyeser after his first up win in the Wiseberry Wyong Real Estate Maiden (1100m).

Mesmereyeser was having his first start for Pride and his first start since running ninth in the Listed Reginald Allen at Rosehill last September.

Jason Collett allowed the filly to drop out early before finishing down the centre of the track to collar the Gai Waterhouse trained favourite Long Shadow (Blake Shinn) and beat that horse by three quarters of a length.

“That was a strong win and she will have no trouble handling 1200 metres at Canterbury,” Pride said.

“I gave her two trials after she came to me and both were very good. There is a lot of upside to this filly.”

• Jockeys Christian Reith and Jason Collett and trainer Kris lees had winning doubles at the Wyong meeting.

Reith completed his double on the Lees trained Moss’n Time in the Arizona Smash Repairs Class One (1350m) after earlier winning on Tumult.

Lees made it a double when Monaco Doll (Hugh Bowman) came from last early to win the TM Concreting Benchmark 59 (2100m).

The mare is in career best form and that was her third win from her last four starts.

The David Payne trained Devil Miss found winning form in the Bob Simms Memorial Class One (1600m) to give Collett a double after his success on Mesmereyeser.

• The Gai Waterhouse trained Trumped will have one more provincial start, possibly again at Wyong, before heading to the city, after leading all the way to win the Renee Butcher 3YO Maiden (1350m).

Foreman, Edward O’Rourke said Trumped was a big, raw boned horse and the trips to the provincials were part of his learning curve.

“Gai plans to give him one more provincial start then he will go to town,” O’Rourke said.

“He has plenty of ability but plenty to learn as well.”
