The award carries added prestige following last week’s announcement that the winner will receive the Nathan Berry Medal, honouring the popular rider who passed away on 3 April.

The Nathan Berry Medal will be awarded to the most successful jockey over the 10 Group races of The Championships staged at Royal Randwick on April 12 and Saturday April 19.

The point score is decided on a 3-2-1 basis, with Nash Rawiller holding a two-point lead going into the second and final day of The Championships this weekend. Should there be a tie, a count back on the number of winners ridden will decide the medallist and if scores are still tied, multiple medals will be awarded.

Rawiller earned five points after winning the Group One Inglis Sires’ aboard Peggy Jean and finishing second on Royal Descent in the Group One The Star Doncaster Mile.

He has mounts in five of Saturday’s six The Championships races: Clifton Red (Girvan Waugh Royal Randwick Stakes), Dothraki (Arrowfield Royal Sovereign Stakes), Red Tracer (Cellarbrations Queen of the Turf Stakes), Miss Mossman (Seven News Australian Oaks) and Silent Achiever (Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes).

Nash Rawiller said: “This is an award that every jockey would love to win. I know it’s an award that all the boys are keen to win because of who it represents.

“Nathan was a great jockey and a great mate and I would be over the moon and honoured if I could win the first one. Just to know I’m in front gives me a good feeling and hopefully with five strong rides this Saturday I can stay in the lead.”

The latest point score is:

5 Nash Rawiller

3 Hugh Bowman, Craig Newitt, Zac Purton, Blake Shinn

2 Glen Boss, Kerrin McEvoy

1 Tommy Berry, Damian Browne, Jim Cassidy
