Texan Warney Builds Cult Following

3 minute read

The Darryl Dodson trained Texan Warney will be bordering on cult figure status should he achieve back-to-back wins in Sundays $25,000 Casterton Cup.

The eight-year-old saves his best performances for tracks on the South Australian / Victoria border where his record includes a three-peat of Horsham Cups (2010-2011-12) and the the Apsley Cup at Edenhope.

Dodson said it was difficult to assess Texan Warney’s chances on Sunday due to the gelding’s often fragile state of mind.

“Mentally he’s never really got older than being a two-year-old, you never know which Texan Warney is going to turn up,” Dodosn said.

“He can be quiet as a mouse and run a big race and sometimes he’s just the opposite.

“I feel he’s been a little bit unlucky this preparation. His form this year is actually better than when he won the Cup in 2013.

“He managed to pull out a big run from nowhere last year and we’re hoping he can do something similar again.”

Texan Warney has drawn barrier five and will be partnered by regular rider Holly McKechnie.

“The draw will give him a good chance to settle and hopefully we’ll be parked in a nice spot,” Dodson said.

“Holly gets on with him really well and knows his traits, she has been aboard on a number of the cup wins and hopefully she can add to the tally on Sunday”.

A winner 14 races with 20 minor placings from 80 starts and $376,785 in stakes, Texan Warney has proved more than a useful galloper for the stable.

The Casterton Cup program also includes the $30,000 Casterton Steeplechase (3800m) over the famous live hedges, a BM 120 Hurdle (3300m) and Maiden Hurdle (3300m).
