Aghamore Looking For More Cup Success

3 minute read

Aghamore will be out to record his second cup success in less than a month at Cessnock on Tuesday in the Jungle Juice Cup.

Aghamore previously won the Cessnock Cup (1350m) on June 2.

“It would be great win the Jungle Juice Cup,” Howlett said. “He likes racing at Cessnock and has drawn barrier one, a good gate especially at Cessnock.

“It looks a lovely race for him.”

Aghamore, by More Than Ready out of the Redoute’s Choice mare, Nakedindaspa, is raced by the Singleton-based Phil and Leanne Moore and Howlett’s wife, Anika.

The now four-year-old gelding was purchased for $90,000 as a yearling after he was initially passed in at the Easter Inglis sales.

Aghamore, nicknamed ‘Aggy,’ has recorded six wins and eight placing’s from 23 starts.

“He’s been racing really well, consistent,” Howlett added. “I thought it was a good win in the Cessnock Cup when he went to the front early and kept going fighting off the challengers in the straight.

“His last run at Rosehill was good too. I was happy with it.

“He’s pulled up good and I’ve just kept him ticking over since then.

“I’m happy with where he’s at.”

Aghamore was a last start 1.6 lengths fourth to Generalife over 1350m at Rosehill on June 14 when he led and battled on well over the latter stages.

The well bred gelding has been racing in good, consistent form recently and Howlett said there was no reason why he couldn’t get the job done at Cessnock.

“He’s a nice horse, a real good type,” Howlett added. “He’s good to do anything with and a trouble free animal.

“I expect him to go well on Tuesday.”

The Jungle Juice cup, inaugurated in 1981, has also been a happy hunting ground for jockey Robert Thompson. Thompson has won the iconic event nine times.

He will partner the Jeremy Sylvester-trained Youthful King, a Cessnock specialist. Sylvester will also saddle up topweight Collar, a Rachael Murray mount.
