Dyer Chasing Big Darwin Double

3 minute read

Victorian trainer Neil Dyer is aiming to continue the remarkable Darwin Cup carnival success he has enjoyed at Fannie Bay over the last seven years.

The Kyneton trainer is aiming to land the carnival’s feature double at Fannie Bay this weekend.

He has Fanie Bay specialist Action Again aiming for back-to-back win in Saturday’s $135,000 Palmerston Sprint (1200m while stablemates Cantonese and Royal Request are in contention for Monday’s $200,000 Darwin Cup (2000m).

“I’m content and I’m certainly not getting carried away, but the thought of winning both races is an exciting prospect,” Dyer said.

“I’m just doing my job. I’m not about to make any outlandish statementsets as there are plenty of good horses in the Palmerston and the Cup.”

The seven-year-old Action Again thrives in the Top End having won six races from as many starts at Fannie Bay in the last three years.

“He is a powerhouse on the dirt track,” Dyer said. “He is a big, strong bugger and for big horses weight isn’t really an issue.”

Dyer, who won the Darwin Cupo with Hawks Bay two years ago, said Cantonese and Royal Request seem to be peaking perfectly for Monday’s race.

Former Sydney stayer Cantonese finished unplaced in his first two starts in Darwin in June over 1200m and 1300m but improved to finish second behind Smarty Mac in the Chief Ministers Cup (1600m) and third behind Saturday Sorcerer and Spartan Eagle in last week’s Metric Mile.

Royal Request won first-up at Fannie Bay over 1300m on June 21 and has since finished second behind Gravitational in the NT Guineas before taking out the NT Derby (2000m).

“Cantonese is a tough campaigner and I’m hoping Royal Request can match it against the best in open company,” Dyer said.

“Cantonese is a good chance and I am playing it by ear with Royal Request. You can only hope that he runs a good race.”
