Ken Dunbar Suspended For Six Weeks

3 minute read

Racing NSW Stewards today continued their inquiries into licensed jockey Ken Dunbar’s handling of Carinda Girl at Mudgee on July 13.

Dunbar was found guilty of a charge under AR135(b) and (c) in that as the rider of Carinda Girl, the fifth placegetter in the Federal Hotel Benchmark 50 Handicap (1600m) at Mudgee Race Club’s meeting held at Mudgee Racecourse on Sunday, 13th July 2014, he did fail to give that mare full opportunity to win or finishing the best possible place in that field. The particulars of that charge being:

1) At the entrance to the home straight, when Carinda Girl was positioned eight horses wide and to the outside of the heels of Easy Escape, he failed to continue Carinda Girl’s run to the outside of Easy Escape where there was a clear and unimpeded run. Such actions by jockey Dunbar resulted in Carinda Girl, which was some eight lengths off the leader Anytime Baby, not being ridden out with vigour and purpose.

2) Near the 400m mark, when racing some eight horses wide and positioned on the back of Easy Escape, he directed Carinda Girl back towards the inside when there was at all times a clear and unimpeded run to the outside of Easy Escape, which would have allowed him to ride his mount out with full vigour to the finish line. Such actions by Ken Dunbar resulted in Carinda Girl, which was some eight lengths off the leader Anytime Baby, being held up and not being ridden out with any vigour and purpose.

3) Near the 300m, he continued to direct Carinda Girl inwards toward the rail and failed to take a run three horses off the rail that was available to him between Cadel’s Luck and Adios Atlantis. Such actions by jockey Dunbar resulted in Carinda Girl, which was some seven lengths off the leader Anytime Baby, being held up and not being ridden out with any vigour and purpose.

4) Passing the 300m he directed Carinda Girl into a position behind Cadel’s Luck, one off the rails whereby at all times, there was a run to the inside of that horse. Such actions by Ken Dunbar resulted in Carinda Girl, which was some six lengths off the leader Anytime Baby, being held up and not tested by you until he directed Carinda Girl back inside Cadel’s Luck and into that run after passing the 150m.

After consideration of all matters pertinent to penalty, including Ken Dunbar’s extensive experience as a jockey in that he has been licenced in that capacity for approximately 25 years, the fact Ken Dunbar had incurred one breach under AR135(b) in excess of 20 years ago when he was licensed as an apprentice in Victoria, and precedent penalties for breaches under AR135(b) and (c), Ken Dunbar’s licence to ride in races was suspended for a period to commence on Tuesday, 12th August 2014 and to expire on Monday, 22nd September 2014, on which day he may ride.

Jockey Ken Dunbar was advised of his appeal rights under the provisions of LR106(1).
