Foreign Prince has taken advantage of a smart ride from in-form apprentice Winona Costin to take out the opener at Randwick on Chelmsford Stakes Day.
There had been some query on whether they often bold going Foreign Prince could take his form to the mile but when Costin asked him to settle in behind the leading pair he relaxed well and from there he was always going to be hard to hold out.
The in-form Costin let him roll out as they topped the rise and he let down strongly to collar Hunter Jack who had taken over at the 300m and win running away, justifying his place at the head of the market.
There looks to be more to come from both Foreign Prince and Winona Costin and trainer David Payne was impressed with both after the race.
"I said look they are going to take you on for sure, if they do, give him a sit," he said.
"She's done well.
"He's A High Chaparral so he looks promising. He's only had ten runs and he has won four, so you'd like more like him.
The Randwick track has taken a beating from the rain and Costin confirmed that the track was riding as though well into the heavy range on her return to scale.
"It's pretty heavy," she said.
"But this horse got through it well. I thought they might give me a bit of pressure so I was happy to take a sit and stay off the fence.
"It was his first time over the mile so I wanted to give him the easiest ride possible."
