Singapore bound jockeys Michael Rodd and Craig Newitt head up a strong list of jockeys with mounts in Friday’s $80,000 Wodonga Gold Cup.
Rodd joins forces with Leon and Troy Corstens with the mount on Kilmore Cup winner Sweet As Bro while Newitt rides Minnie Downs for top local jockey Brian Cox.
Cox, who is bidding to win the Wodonga Cup for the 11th time, has also declared Full Hand, Smoken Cash and Grassini as acceptors in the 13-stroing field.Rodd and Newitt will be leaving Melbourne next month to take up riding contracts with the Singapore Turf Club from the start of the new season at Kranji on January 1.
Neither Rodd or the Corstens stable have previously contested a Wodonga Gold Cup.“It is the first time we have targeted a Wodonga Cup and I think we have got a horse more than capable of winning the race,” said Leon Corstens.
Mick Price, Michael Moroney and the in-form training partnership of David Hayes and Tom Dabernig also have acceptors in the Wodonga Cup.Price is returning with last year’s winner Stratigraphy (Daniel Moor), Moroney will rely on last start Flemington winner Saint Or Sinner (Jake Noonan) and Hayes and Dabernig supply the topweight Spacecraft (Brandon Stockdale).
Moroney has won the Wodonga Cup twice with Syndrome (2009) and Zabisco (2012).Albury trainer Brett Cavanough is double handed with Prince Pedro (Jake Duffy) and Price Of Glory (Linda Meech).
