More By Chance looking to go back to back at Cowra Sunday

3 minute read

Dubbo trainer Mark Jones is hoping More By Chance can repeat his last start performance when he steps out in the Breakout River Meats Class 1 Hcp (1100m) at Cowra on Sunday.

The More Than Ready gelding broke through last start, his ninth, leading all the way to win a 1000m maiden at Dubbo on February 8 following a 154-day spell.

“Sometimes they go on after a maiden win, sometimes they don’t,” Jones said realistically. “I’m hoping he goes on. On his work he’s improved a bit and gone ahead.

“He’d done a fair bit of work before his first-up win and Matthew rode him exactly the way I wanted and the way he’s best ridden.

“He likes to race handy but not at a break neck speed so he can have plenty in hand at the finish.”

More By Chance was previously raced by retail king, Gerry Harvey.

Jones purchased the gelding as a tried horse and races him with Peter Lewsam from Wellington, Dubbo-based Randall Thompson and Harvey Smith from Goulburn.

Lewsam and Smith have raced numerous horses with Jones.

More By Chance began his career with Chris Waller in Sydney. After four ordinary trials he was later transferred to Gerald Ryan and managed a third in a Gosford maiden before being put on the market.

“He’s no champion but we’re hoping he can win a couple more races,” Jones said. “He’s a nice quiet horse, sensible and a pretty good type.

“He’s easy to do anything with.”

Matthew Cahill has stuck with the gelding.

“Over the years Matthew and I have had a lot of winners together,” Jones suggested. “He’s been really good to me and it will be good to have him ride More By Chance again.

“He’s in good order. He’s done everything right and improved a bit.”
