Waller Team Working Towards Grafton Cup

A quick back up is on the cards for the Chris Waller-trained stayer Danchai in Saturday’s $205,000 Tattersall’s Cup at the Gold Coast.

Waller, currently in the UK preparing Brazen Beau for his Royal Ascot assignment on Saturday, will consult with his stable staff before resolving plans for the grey import.

Danchai recorded his first Australian win in last Saturday’s Ipswich Cup (2100m) when having just his third run back from a spell.

It took 12 starts for the former French winner to break through for Waller. It would not surprise if the trainer isn’t keen to run him in Saturday’s Group 3 event over 2400m in his current form.

The Waller stable has also nominated Trade Commissioner for the Tatts Cup despite his sixth behind stablemates Reigning and Bagman over 2000m at Rosehill last Saturday.

Waller will face a dilemma when he returns from the UK sorting out his team for the $150,000 Blanchard Haulage Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 9.

He has multiple choices with Reigning, Bagman, Danchai, Trade Commissioner and last Saturday’s Flemington winner Black Jag all in the mix to represent the stable in the Grafton Cup.

Waller will be striving to win his first Grafton Cup. His six previous starters in the race have included two beaten favourites and a second last year with Secessio.

He had four final acceptors last year before reducing his starters to Secessio and Hoylonny.
