Burbero lowered the colours of some highly-rated gallopers with a fast-finishing victory in the Group 2 Missile Stakes over 1200 metres at Randwick earlier this month.

Bjorn Baker’s seven-year-old beat home Weary and Temple of Boom and would encounter a big jump in distance should he take his place in the Rowley Mile, a Listed race over 1600 metres.

Burbero is expected to line up in Saturday’s Warwick Stakes at Randwick but Baker is keeping the Hawkesbury option open for the gelding.

The Rowley Mile had originally attracted just six entries but that number had swelled to 15 when nominations were extended to Monday.

Also in the entry list is Gai Waterhouse’s former Sydney Cup winner The Offer, Garry Frazer’s last-start winner Campania and Wade Slinkard’s Footy Fan, while Chris Waller has four entries in Marenostro, Rugged Cross, Eigelstein and Hollywood Bound.

Also entered at Hawkesbury is debutante Canterbury winner I’ll Take The Jag in a Benchmark 70 Handicap (1400m) and stakes-placed Godolphin filly Mesa in the Maiden Plate (1100m).

Burbero was ridden patiently by Rory Hutchings and was eased to settle in last place in the eight-horse field. He switched between runners on passing the 300m, got to fourth at the 100m and then finished fast to score a good win, his second in Group Two class. Weary went back from his outside barrier (8) and settled in seventh place, one off the rails. He switched across heels at the 300m, got to fifth at the 100m and continued to run on strongly for a very good first-up second. Temple Of Boom had a good trip in third place on the rails, challenged at the 200m and fought on for third after having every chance. Ten-yearold Zaratone went to the front as usual, but did not run along too quickly and then held on quite well for a sound (1.3 lengths) fourth in yet another honest effort. Messene raced outside the leader (Zaratone) to the home turn and held on for (1.6 lengths) fifth at his first run since last September and should be improved by the outing.
