Zarlu primed stepping up to 1600m at Wagga Tuesday

3 minute read

Wagga trainer Peter J Morgan has a good insight into the family of Zarlu strongly fancied on his home track on Tuesday.

Zarlu is by Zariz out of the Danehill Dancer mare Cha Cha Dancer.

Cha Cha Dancer, who had a limited career back in mid-2007, was bred and raced by Bill Prigg and his son Glen and formerly trained by Morgan.

“She (Cha Cha Dancer) had four runs for three placing’s,” Morgan recalled of the mare. “She was as good a horse I’ve had but she bowed a tendon three times.”

Zarlu has inherited much of the family’s galloping ability.

From 20 starts, the six-year-old has won three races and recorded eight placing’s. His racing pattern however, he’s a horse with no early pace and gets back in his races, has probably cost him more wins.

It was a similar story last start when Zarlu went to the post the $2.80 favourite in a Class 3 event at Wagga on August 21.

Unfortunately for the Prigg’s Morgan and favourite backers Zarlu conceded too much start and rattled home to be beaten 0.8 lengths behind Cheeky Devil.

“It was a very good run but he just gave them too much start,” Morgan conceded. “He was dropping back from 1600 to 1400 metres. The only reason was because I couldn’t find a suitable 1600 metre race for him.”

Zarlu steps back to 1600m on Tuesday in the Riverina Day Surgery Benchmark 55 Hcp.

“The extra distance should certainly help him,” Morgan added. “He’s going really good at the moment. He’s fit and forward. He’s a horse that doesn’t take a lot of work, he’s very clean winded.

“He hasn’t missed a beat.”

Morgan added Zarlu would get back again on Tuesday, hopefully not conceding too much start this time.

“That’s just his pattern. He’s got no early pace,” he said.

The predicted heavy 10 racing surface holds no fears for Morgan.

“He’s had two goes on heavy tens at Wagga and won them both well,” he suggested. “The wet track certainly won’t worry him.”

Zarlu will be ridden by Brad Clark and launches from barrier seven.
