Trainer Gai Waterhouse has issued strict instructions to her jockey Tommy Berry to ensure the favourite Echo Gal attempts an all the way win in the $100,000 Arrowfield Mona Lisa Stakes at Wyong on Friday.

Berry is under orders to make sure he gets Echo Gal away quickly and to try and dictate to her rivals from the front.

It sets Berry a task as rivals such as Two Blue, Il Mio Destino and I’m In The Money are all known as leaders.

At her previous start, in the Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Randwick, Echo Gal dwelt at the start, settled third and was narrowly beaten by Amicus.

“The Toy Show was not her style of racing, she races best when she can dictate in front,” said Waterhouse’s assistant trainer Mark Newnham.

“She has drawn the rails, Wyong suits her style of racing and she raced there last December before she went to the Gold Coast Magic Millions.”

This year’s Mona Lisa has drawn has drawn a capacity field full of quality.

John Sargent’s decision not to start G1 winner Kirramosa and save her for Randwick on Saturday cleared the way for Blake Shinn to again link with the Wyong trained mare Two Blue, trained by Kristen Buchanan.

Two Blue is normally a leader but Buchanan does not want Shinn to get into a speed battle with Echo Gal.

“If they go mad in front I would prefer Blake to have her back off the speed. He will have to make some decisions when the field jumps,” Buchanan said.

“With the amount of speed in the race I think it is going to be made for the swoopers although that could be a problem in a field of 16.

“We have had this race ear marked for Two Blue for some time but it has drawn what I think is probably the best field ever.

“She faces a tough assignment. All we can do is hope things fall her way.”

Berry Delicious (Winona Costin), going for four straight wins, and Marple Miss (Jim Cassidy) share second favouritism in early betting behind Echo Gal.

Costin, who won the Mona Lisa last year on Bouzy Rouge, rode Berry Delicious to her last win at Rosehill in mid July.

Trainer Jason Coyle gave Berry Delicious a let up after that win to prepare her for the Epsom and this race is the next step towards that goal.
