A $3.50 favourite for the derby, Tarzino also heads Vase betting at $4 after drawing gate 10 in the field of 12.

Tarzino is coming off a last-start seventh in the Caulfield Guineas and that race provides one of the major form references with Sovereign Nation (fourth), Shards (13th), Last Bullet (14th) and Kentucky Flyer (16th) also coming through that race.

Three fillies are lining up off last start runs in the Thousand Guineas with runner-up Jameka drawing gate five, fourth-placed Pasadena Girl in one and sixth-placed Sagaronne in barrier four.

Other key chances include Hierarchal in eight and Tally from barrier 12.

TAB fixed odds:

$4 Tarzino

$4.40 Pasadena Girl

$5 Jameka

$6 Sovereign Nation

$8 Tally

$11 Shards

$14 Hierarchal

$18 Last Bullet, Sagaronne

$41 Red Alto

$51 Assertive Star, Kentucky Flyer.

Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) runner-up Jameka put up a good performance in winning here. She settled well in fourth place on the rails, was under riding at the 700m as the pace increased, set out after the leader (Shards) coming to the home turn, got to the front at the 50m and went on to win well in a promising staying effort. It was also an excellent ride by Damien Oliver. Godolphin’s colt Shards went to the front, travelled then along nicely but really picked up the pace from the 700m. He had a big lead nearing the home turn and was only overtaken in the closing stages for a good second. Tarzino was ridden quietly and settled back in last place in the 11-horse field. He was under riding to make ground from the 700m, got to a distant sixth (wide out) at the home turn and kept running on well, getting up for third in a good staying effort, losing no admirers for his prospects in next Saturday’s Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m). Pasadena Girl was sixth on the rails, was also under riding from the 700m, got to fourth at the home turn and battled on well to hold that position at the post, beaten just under two lengths. Godolphin-raced Tally was back in ninth place, got between runners rounding the home turn and steadily made ground to finish a sound (3.7 lengths) fifth.
