Dale And Avdulla Make a Lethal Team At Canberra

3 minute read

Brenton Avdulla, the leading rider in NSW this season, and Matt Dale, the pacesetter in the ACT training premiership, should make a formidable pairing when they team up in five races at Canberra on Tuesday.

Avdulla, who has ridden 56 winners in NSW since August 1 including 22 in the city, will be making his first visit to a Canberra meeting this season.

The 24-year-old jockey has only had 30 rides on the Canberra track during his career for just one win but couldn’t resist the opportunity to ride for Dale considering the outstanding success the young trainer is enjoying this season with a total of 27 wins in NSW, Victoria and the ACT.

Dale is leading the Canberra premiership with 13 wins and has also won 12 races on NSW tracks including eight in Sydney. He has also won two races in Melbourne at Caulfield and Moonee Valley.

Avdulla has been a minor contributor to Dale’s success, having ridden one win and one placing from three Sydney rides for the trainer this season.

Those results include his last start Randwick second on Northern Fury, one of his five rides for Dale at Canberra on Tuesday.

Avdulla also rides Decoded, Hermosa Beach, Linsang and Itchyzariz for Dale and has two other mounts – Bernie's Desert and Ganar - for Warwick Farm trainer Michael Costa.

"The only one I know is Northern Fury,” Avdulla said.

"I think she's a nice horse. She needed the run the other day and it probably just cost her a win.

"She's second up on her home track and back in grade. She should be hard to beat."
