Bass Strait, a former member of the David Hayes and Tom Dabernig team, arrives in Melbourne this week and will start over 1600m at Caulfield on Saturday.

“A couple of Bass Strait’s owners wanted to take him back east as there aren’t many races for him. I will still train him,” Parnham said.

“We are really happy with the way he is going and thought with his current rating he would fit into some races in the east.”

Bass Strait was a last start third in the C.B. Cox Stakes at Ascot last month behind subsequent Perth Cup winner Delicacy at weight-for-age.

The $100,000 Summer Championship (1600m) at Caulfield on Australia Day could be a target for Bass Strait after Saturday’s race.

Rommel, the winner of last year’s G2 WA Guineas and the G3 Zeditave Stakes at Caulfield, was set to accompany Bass Strait to Melbourne but is now spelling after suffering an injury during the recent Perth carnival.
