Malaguerra is at the centre of one of the hottest Melbourne formlines and will be out to add another resuming win to his record at Flemington on Saturday.
Malaguerra resumes in the Listed ATA/Bob Hoysted Handicap over 1000 metres and while he has never been down the Flemington straight he is unbeaten first up and is a two-time winner at the course.
Those victories both came during the Melbourne Cup Carnival and the first of those, a benchmark 90 over 1400 metres, produced a swag of subsequent winners including Group 1 victor Good Project and stakes winner Durendal.
Co-trainer Lee Freedman said the sprint trip and the straight course were both queries for Malaguerra but was pleased with the gelding’s progress.
“His first up form is extremely good and it will be interesting to see how he goes down the straight at 1000m,” Freedman told Michael Felgate on RSN Racing and Sport.
“I feel if there’s some good speed in the race he’ll be finishing off his race very strongly.”The Freedman camp also have a leading hope with Estaminet in the Mrs Mac’s Family Bakery Sprint over 1100 metres.
Estaminet has won both of her runs this campaign including over 1000m down the straight last start.“She’s up in grade but her win was dominant the other day and she returned good ratings from that race,” Freedman said.
“Providing we get the Estaminet of two weeks ago she’s going to take some beating.”
