Chattachang out to maintain unbeaten record at Goulburn Thursday

3 minute read

Queanbeyan trainer Garry Clarke will look for feedback from top Sydney rider Jason Collett after Chattachang attempts to maintain his unbeaten record at Goulburn on Thursday.

Collett partners the promising four-year-old in the S & K Wilson Plumbing Benchmark 65 Hcp (1000m).

Chattachang is unbeaten in all three starts and shows well above average ability.

“With Jason on board he should be able to give us a good guide whether to stay in the country with him or if he’s good enough to go to Sydney,” Clarke said. “I’ll be very interested to get his opinion.

“He’s shown a lot of ability in a short time. I’m really stoked with the horse.”

Chattachang is by Bon Hoffa out of the Hurricane Sky mare, Hurricane Stroller. He is a half-brother to two other horses under Clarke’s care, Oh So Adorable, the winner of eight races and Kaboombie Boy (two wins). The mare is currently in foal to Bon Hoffa.

The trio of gallopers were bred by Dee Why-based owner Paul Newton who races Chattachang with Clarke and his father, Eric.

Chattachang recorded two wins at Queanbeyan and Canberra in his first preparation as a three-year-old after Clarke gave the gelding plenty of time early to mature.

He was then spelled for 122-days and returned with an impressive 1.8 length win in a 900m Class 2 Hcp at Queanbeyan on February 15.

“He was very immature early,” Clarke reiterated. “This time in he’s definitely matured more. He’s still learning what it’s all about but he’s improved, improved on his first-up win that was enormous.

“The jockey (Richard Bensley) didn’t have to really extend him.

“I’ve spaced his races and the problem now will be trying to keep the handicappers under control so he doesn’t get weighted out of his races.

“He’s doing everything right so far. Eventually I think he’ll get 1200 metres because he settles so well in his races. He tries his heart out. The 1000 metres on Thursday will suit him at this stage.

“I’m just trying to place him in races where he can win.

“They’ll know he’s there. I can assure you of that.”

Chattachang will carry 61kg and launches from barrier eight.
