Last year’s winner Rock Royalty and 2014 victor Big Money line up in a full field of 16 plus four emergencies for the 2016 Ramornie Handicap (1200m).

Big Money carries the topweight of 59kg for trainer Rodney Northam and jockey Robert Thompson, who was aboard when he won the Ramornie Handicap in 2014.

Since then Big Money has won two Group 3 events and Listed race and his last two outings have been at Group 1 level, finishing sixth in the Goodwood and 12th in the Stradbroke Handicap.

Rock Royalty carries the minimum 54kg and hasn’t run a place since his Ramornie win last year.

Other key acceptors in the 2016 Ramornie Handicap include last start Group 3 winner Into The Red, former Hong Kong galloper Smart Volatility and last start Sydney winner Mount Nebo.

Trainer John O’Shea has a pair of runners in the 2016 Ramornie Handicap in Barbed and Mogador while Gai Waterhouse has accepted with Echo Gal and Clarry Conners has veteran sprinter Decision Time engaged.

Former Hong Kong-trained Smart Volatility, who was having his second start since coming to Australia, showed good pace from his wide barrier (14) and settled in third place, but caught three deep without cover. He challenged at the home turn, got to the front at the 200m and then dug deep to score a smart win in a photo finish. Big Money raced in eighth place, one off the rails. He went deep rounding the home turn, challenged strongly at the 100m and the fought gamely for a close and very good second under his 59kg top weight. Steel Zip had a nice trip from his inside barrier (1), racing in seventh spot on the rails. He got through at the 100m and then battled well for a close-up third. Mogador was back about tenth, between runners but was blocked on straightening. He improved in restricted room at the 100m and then battled well for an unlucky (0.7 lengths) fourth. The favourite Into The Red began well, enjoyed a good run in fifth place, briefly looked a threat at the 200m and then fought on for (1.7 lengths) seventh after appearing to have had every chance.
