Friday's Randwick Trials - Review by Chris Scholtz

3 minute read

All eyes were on the big names at the Randwick trials on Friday but there were a host of eye-catching performances from horses set to make their mark in coming weeks.

Chris Scholtz pinpoints the horses to follow from the Randwick session.

BLACKBOOKERS: Testashadow; Winx; Chetwood; Sarajevo; Bryneich; Sezanne; Omei Sword; Drachenfels; Impending; Burning Passion; Ma Tante; Bit Dusty; Evacuation.

HEAT 1: TESTASHADOW rounded up the leader easily in the last 200m for a soft win and there was six lengths to the third horse. Looks ready to resume in the right form.

HEAT 2: Hot trial with WINX never out of second gear as she cruised through the line for a strong fourth. The winner SMART VOLATILITY did as much as he had to and has obviously held his form from his Ramornie win at Grafton. The placegetters COSMIC CUBE and SOUTHERN LEGEND will come on lengths in condition from this trial while GENERALIFE was only asked to work to the line late from last. It was only a conditioning trial for the Godolphin stayers HARTNELL, TALLY and MAGIC HURRICANE.

HEAT 3: The star colt CAPITALISM travelled easily three wide and did all that was needed to get the better of EL DIVINO in the last 50 metres. The latter was ridden along and responded keenly as they left the others a long way behind. SCARLET RAIN was unable to match them after she led them up. PRIZED ICON wasn’t asked to extend in a pleasing start to his prep.

HEAT 4: Godolphin have a smart one in CHETWOOD. Led easily and his five lengths margin at the line flattered the others.

HEAT 5: SARAJEVO was another impressive winner for Godolphin. Settled last and looked good extending easily down the outside for a soft win. Has obviously come up in good form.

HEAT 6: PITTSBURGH responded to riding to get the better of his rivals with his race experience a factor. Runner-up AWAKE THE STARS was given a solid hitout. Liked the easy trials behind the pace by the unraced Godolphin pair EUSEBIO and BRYNEICH.

HEAT 7: Strong win from off the pace by the Chris Waller-trained SEZANNE. Extended impressively and too strong last 100m with plenty in hand indicates she has come on well since her last campaign.

HEAT 8: Another classy trial dominated by the unbeaten RUSSIAN REVOLUTION. He dictated the pace and won without being fully tested, holding a margin over the impressive filly OMEI SWORD who came through the field from the back half to hit the line with zest. Both will play a big hand in quality 3YO races. Godolphin’s unraced DRACHENFELS is one for the black book as held his ground well for third after tracking wide under a hold. Good type.

HEAT 9: Mark down MACKELLAR'S LOVE and JULIUS CAESAR as a likely pair for the midweeks.

HEAT 10: The Snowden trained SNIP MISSILE is a runner and had the pace and turn of foot to win while stablemate TAJ MAHAL impressed finishing off strongly late for second. OUT OF WEDLOCK also did enough to indicate good prospects.

HEAT 11: RED HEARTS worried WHITULA out of it. Average trial. ZORRO was OK, lazy type.

HEAT 12: MEDITERRANEAN had the class edge and did enough to win with something in hand. IMPENDING was the one to catch the eye running on strongly from the rear under a strong hold.

HEAT 13: JOY OF JOYS took the trial in average time. Midweek form.

HEAT 14: Another strong trial from the impressive BURNING PASSION. She powered to the line under a big hold to beat handy stablemate TREE OF JESSE and will take beating wherever she goes next.

HEAT 15: The Waterhouse pair HUSSTERICAL and THYME FOR ROSES dominated. Hussterical responded to the whip to fight on strongly and hold off her stablemate. The latter travelled three wide and went to the line under less pressure in a nice start to her prep.

HEAT 16: Newcomer MA TANTE showed natural pace to lead easily and was never threatened for a smart win. Looks a ready-made winner. The experienced pair SPARKLE and GRETNA both found the line well enough without being fully tested.

HEAT 17: The first pair in this heat MONTANA THUNDER and METEOR GAL were under plenty of pressure. The best efforts came from FIRST CHANNEL, an easy third, and BIT DUSTY, who picked up late to hit the line strongly under a soft ride.

HEAT 18: EVACUATION won his only start before a spell and looks set to go on with it after showing a sharp turn of foot to win easily. The classy GOOD STANDING wasn’t asked to chase the winner and did it easily to finish second.
