3 minute read

Canterbury:

So Willie (Race 1): began awkwardly. When questioned regarding the performance, rider H Bowman stated that his mount was unsuited by the slow early tempo and, after he endeavoured to improve to the outside of Oh So Splendido near the 500m, the tempo quickened, which resulted in his mount being left somewhat flat-footed. He added, after balancing up in the straight, he wasn't disappointed with the finishing effort of the gelding. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the off-foreleg and had lacerations to the mid off-fore cannon and near-hind coronet. Trainer Mr C Waller stated So Willie had pleased since its last start at Rosehill on 13 August 2016 and had no lameness issues in the stable. Mr Waller was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to the gelding racing again. He undertook to report back to the Stewards on the future race plans for So Willie.

Dubaiinstyle (Race 2): prior to the declaration of correct weight the Stewards viewed the official patrol films to ascertain if there were grounds for objection against the winner, Dowdstown Charlie, in relation to, firstly, the whip of H Bowman being accidentally knocked from his grasp by the whip of B Avdulla, rider of Dowdstown Charlie, and, secondly, as to whether Dowdstown Charlie had impeded the running of Dubaiinstyle for some distance near the 100m. When Stewards were satisfied there were not sufficient grounds, having regard to the margin between the two horses at the finish, correct weight was declared. Slow to begin.

Dure (Race 2): a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be lame in the near-foreleg. Trainer M Smith was advised a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Dure racing again.

Bit Dusty (Race 3): rider T Clark stated that, with the gelding stepping up in grade today, in his view it raced somewhat green and would derive benefit from today's performance. He added in his opinion it may be better to drop the gelding back to weaker company, whereby it can gain some race experience. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Squidensquizz (Race 4): the start of the race was delayed when the gelding shifted its near-hind plate, which necessitated it being refitted in the tie-up stalls. Slow to begin. Rider T Clark stated his mount was inclined to overrace throughout the early and middle stages and in his view, stepping back in distance today from 1600m last start, raced dour. He added Squidensquizz would also benefit from being taken to the outside to make its run in clear going. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Trying (Race 4): rider K O'Hara stated that she was caught wide in the middle stages and as a consequence leaving the 700m she elected to restrain to take up a position on the back of Eurella Flight. She added as soon as she obtained cover her mount became awkward in its action and from that point did not respond to her riding and consequently finished well back. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr N Gardner stated in his view when Trying was restrained back towards the rear of the field the gelding failed to stretch out when the tempo of the race increased. He added in his opinion, although the gelding had some wet track form, it may not have appreciated the heavy going. Mr Gardner undertook to report back to the Stewards on the progress of Trying subsequent to the race.

Tsaritsa (Race 5): began awkwardly with its head up and then shortly after was crowded by Gold Symphony, which shifted in. Rounding the home turn commenced to overrace, got its head up and ran out after improving onto the heels of Forget. Tsaritsa was then obliged to race wide without cover for the remainder of the race. A post-race veterinary examination revealed an abrasion to the near-hind bumper and the gelding was displaying a poor post-race recovery.

Testashadow (Race 5): rider App. D Panya stated that she had to make some use of her mount in the early stages to take up a position outside the leader, Burning Passion. She added when placed under pressure in the straight Testashadow was disappointing in its failure to finish the race off and in her view it did handle the heavy track conditions. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr G Portelli advised that Testashadow had worked well leading into today's race, however concurred that it did not handle the heavy track, particularly as it was up in weight and also had not started for a period of 21 days. He indicated it would be his intention to avoid similar tracks in future. Mr Portelli undertook to report on the progress of Testashadow in the days subsequent.

A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to have an abrasion to the off-fore cannon and an abrasion to the off-hind stifle. Rider J Collett could offer no excuse for the poor performance of the filly and added it was most disappointing in that it was a beaten horse shortly after straightening. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the filly to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer R Worthington advised that in his view Honesty Prevails would derive benefit from today's run and attributed today's performance to the fact that the filly did not enjoy a seemless run throughout the event and may not have appreciated racing first up on today's heavy track. Mr Worthington undertook to report back to the Stewards on the condition and the future race plans for the filly subsequent to the race.

Prized Icon (Race 7): sustained a graze to the near-side shoulder en route to the course. The colt was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. She added Prized Icon overraced throughout, refused to settle and consequently did not finish the race off. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the colt to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Trainer Mr J Cummings agreed with the assessment of K O'Hara in that Prized Icon had raced too keenly in the run and consequently was left without a finishing effort. He added the colt had pleased the stable in the lead up to today's race and, although it had drifted significantly in the market, he was confident of it performing well. Trainer Mr C Waller stated that the only explanation he could offer for today's performance was that under the weight of 60 kilograms on today's heavy track the gelding had not been able to quicken when the tempo increased from the 400m. Mr Waller undertook to report back to the Stewards on the condition of Japonisme and the future race plans for the gelding subsequent to the race.
