Betting Wrap - Saturday September 17

3 minute read

Punters who took the short odds on Winx and Hartnell had few worries with both cruising to easy victories at Randwick on Saturday.

On the back of his dominant Chelmsford Stakes win, Hartnell was backed from an opening price of $1.60 during the week with the TAB to as low as $1.38 before starting at $1.40.

Holding well over 70 per cent of all bets on the race, he stalked the leader Storm The Stars before unleashing his big finishing burst to easily defeat Who Shot Thebarman.

Preferment was the only one seriously tried to test the favourite, firming from $7 to $5 but was under pressure a long way out before dropping out of the placings.

Bets: Hartnell $5000 @ $1.40; $5000 @ $1.38

In the next race Winx cruised to her 11th straight win with punters cheering after backing her from $1.15 into $1.08.

Sitting near the tail of the field, Winx worked her way around her rivals before Hugh Bowman pushed the go button, moving away for an easy win over second pick Hauraki.

Despite the short price Winx held nearly 90 per cent of all bets on the race and was also leveraged heavily with multi players too.

Bets: Winx $40,000 @ $1.08; $15,000 @ $1.08

The successful run of the short-priced favourites came to an end in the seventh when English missed the placings.

Bottoming out at $1.90 before starting at $2.10, English held 72 per cent of all bets on the race and was one of the best backed runners in Australia for the day.

Takedown caused an upset at $15 – in fact of all the runners it held the least amount of money.

Kaepernick was the only one seriously backed to beat the favourite and wound up third.

Bets: English $30,000 @ $2.10; $10,000 @ $2

Sons Of John enjoyed some good each way support throughout the day, firming from $10 to $6.50 before winning the Bill Ritchie.

He came with a well-timed run to beat the drifter Torgersen ($9.50 - $15) and Federal, the equal $5 favourite with Happy Clapper.

Together Federal and Happy Clapper held 55 per cent of all wagers on the event.

Bets: Handfast $2000 @ $6 multiple times; Happy Clapper $2000 @ $5; Sadler’s Lakes $3000 @ $9.50 twice.

In Melbourne He's Our Rokkii was a horror result for the TAB.

Punters were more than willing to take the $2.60 on offer in the morning and backed him in to $2.40.

Dominating betting, He’s Our Rokkii held a whopping 80 per cent of the total investment on the race.

Jungle Edge ($8) and Sebring Sun ($7) were the two bets tried to beat the favourite.

Bets: He’s Our Rokkii $32,000 @ $2.40.

Keen Array.

Keen Array was the most popular in betting before winning race seven but there was a stack of late money for The Virginian.

Keen Array started favourite despite drifting from $3.50 to $3.80 with The Virginian smashed late from $6 to $3.90.

Keen Array held on to win in a narrow finish over the outsider Well Sprung ($35).

Bets: The Virginian $3000 @ $3.90; Keen Array $2000 @ $3.80 multiple times.
