Queanbeyan Cup Preview

3 minute read

One or both winning sequences will end for Midnight Obsession or Joe Cleary – trainer of the main danger Uncle Gerry – in Sunday’s $35,000 Allbids.com.au Queanbeyan Cup.

Midnight Obsession has been on a winning streak of four wins since breaking her maiden while Cleary has won the past two Queanbeyan Cups.

Hometown trainer Cleary loves the race and believes the three kilograms turnaround in the weights from their meeting in the prelude may prove decisive.

Cleary, who has won with Landlocked and Hudson County the past two years, feels Uncle Gerry is at his peak after a few runs back from a break.

“It was only the last bit that Midnight Obsession got the better of us last start,” Cleary said.

“He is better again now and will race right on the speed and prove hard to beat.”

Midnight Obsession’s transformation has been quite staggering after struggling to win a race and then putting together four straight.

The huge climb in the weights to 61 kilograms from 54 kilograms is the question mark for the mare.

“It’s a big jump of seven kilograms. I know she is very tough and she stays very well over the 2000 metres,” co-trainer Scott Collings said.

The former jockey added Midnight Obsession wouldn’t be able to give Uncle Gerry – the likely leader – too much start.

“He can’t get a cheap lead and we will be closer than last time with the big weight,” he said.

Like Cleary, jockey John Kissick has won the past two Queanbeyan Cups and will be legged aboard Blue Carlou on Sunday.

Collings and co-trainer Keith Dryden will also run Ultima Chance in the Thunderbolt (1000m).

Ultima Chance has won three of his five starts at Queanbeyan and is first-up since August.

Despite only six starters, the race is intriguing with Ketchum in superb form with two wins since a spell and course specialist Chattachang ready to fire first-up.

El Toranado recently won a trial at the track and will also represent Cleary from the inside gate.
