From The Stewards’ Room – November 26

3 minute read

Racing and Sports have scanned the stewards’ reports to find the key information punters need to know from Australian racing on Saturday November 26.

Rosehill:

Reflectivity (Race 2): dislodged its rider shortly after leaving the parade. Rider T Berry was uninjured. On arrival at the barriers the colt was examined by the Club's Veterinary Officer and passed fit to start. Raced greenly in the straight and over the concluding stages Reflectivity, which was closing the race off strongly, commenced to hang in, causing some tightening to Ipso Facto before being corrected by its rider. In this incident Florid was bumped. T Berry explained that over about the last 50m his mount commenced to hang in under pressure and, as he was concerned that it was starting to encroach on the running line of Ipso Facto, he was obliged to stop riding and straighten his mount in the run to the post. Stewards in accepting T Berry's explanation were of the view that, whilst his actions may have prejudiced his chances of winning the race, the corrective measures he undertook were appropriate in the circumstances.

Keep On Charging (Race 2): near the 800m the gelding, which was racing tight to the inside of Allied Power, became unbalanced and bumped Allied Power, which also became unbalanced. The Stewards considered the performance of Keep On Charging, which tailed out, to be unacceptable. A post-race veterinary examination revealed a laceration to the off-hind pastern. Trainer Ms R Dunn advised that the gelding would now be spelled. Notwithstanding this advice Ms Dunn was advised that Keep On Charging would be required to barrier trial prior to racing again.

Balmain Boy (Race 3): began awkwardly, resulting in rider App. N Heywood becoming unbalanced. When questioned regarding the disappointing performance, App. N Heywood explained that the gelding began only fairly and in the early stages he was caught wide without cover. He added in the circumstances he elected to press on and find a position closer to the rail, which he was able to do after the 1200m. He said his mount came under pressure after the 600m and was disappointing in its failure to finish off after travelling satisfactorily throughout the middle stages. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Trainer Mr L Bridge advised that Balmain Boy would now be spelled.

Eschiele (Race 3): when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider App. A Adkins explained that his mount travelled well throughout the early and middle stages, but when under pressure in the straight failed to run on and he believed the principal reason behind the gelding's failure in today's race was that it did not appreciate the firm surface. A post-race veterinary examination of the did not reveal any abnormalities.

My Giuliano (Race 5): when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider J Parr explained that he was caught very wide without cover in the early and middle stages and was therefore obliged to make use of his mount to take up a position outside the leader at about the 1400m. He added, whilst My Giuliano was beaten a considerable margin in the straight, he felt that the early work that it had to do told on its effort in the straight. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Herne's Oak (Race 5): when questioned regarding the poor performance, rider App. D Panya stated she was pleased with the manner in which the gelding travelled throughout the race, however when placed under pressure just prior to the home turn, it failed to quicken and in her opinion raced like a tired horse. A post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be displaying a poor post-race recovery. Mr J Bruce, representing trainer Mr B Baker, said that Herne's Oak was working well in the lead up to today's race and the stable were confident of a forward showing. He added he was at a loss to explain the manner in which the gelding weakened in the straight, apart from the fact that it may not have run the distance of 2400m of today's race. The performance of Herne's Oak, which tailed out, was considered unacceptable and before being permitted to race again the gelding must perform satisfactorily at an official trial.

Ascot Red (Race 5): when questioned, rider C Reith stated he was content with the manner in which the gelding travelled until approximately the 600m, where it came under pressure and compounded noticeably in the straight. He indicated on returning to scale Ascot Red's recovery was of concern. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities, other than the gelding shifted its near-hind plate. The performance of Ascot Red was considered unacceptable and before being permitted to race again it must perform satisfactorily in a trial. Trainer Mr J Sargent advised he would now have the gelding undergo a thorough veterinary examination, which would include blood samples, the results of which he will report to the Stewards.

Pinstripe Lane (Race 5): a post-race veterinary examination revealed the gelding to be acutely lame in the off-fore leg. Mr Paul Snowden, representing co-trainers L and T Corstens, was advised that a veterinary clearance would be required prior to Pinstripe Lane barrier trialling to the satisfaction of the Stewards.

Pursuit Of Honour (Race 5): when questioned regarding the disappointing performance, rider T Angland explained that the gelding travelled well and for this reason after the 600m he elected to shift out in an endeavour to improve. He said, however Pursuit Of Honour was under heavy pressure, failed to respond and was most disappointing in the manner in which it failed to close off. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. Mr C Duckworth, representing trainer Mr C Waller, said in his opinion Pursuit Of Honour had come to the end of its preparation and it is now the intention for the gelding to be spelled.

Onerous (Race 7): shortly after the start was crowded when taken across the heels of Snoopy by Rock Forthe Ladies, which shifted out. When questioned, rider G Schofield explained that due to an incident at the start his mount settled further back than had been intended. He said after the 600m he shifted to the outside of Rock For the Ladies in an endeavour to improve. He added in the early part of the straight Onerous commenced to lay in and for this reason proved somewhat difficult for him to place his mount under full pressure. G Schofield further stated that approaching the 200m he changed his whip over into his right hand, however Onerous when again under pressure failed to respond and only finished the race of one-paced. G Schofield was advised that, although the Stewards accepted that Onerous was laying in, he was nonetheless advised that he should ride his mounts in a manner that is not open to query. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities.

Secret Trail (Race 9): slow to begin. Raced wide without cover throughout the event. A post-race veterinary examination did not reveal any abnormalities. An inquiry was opened into the riding tactics of App. N Heywood, in particular reference to his vigour for some distance in the early part of the straight. After taking evidence from App. Heywood in the presence of his master and co-trainer Mr P Snowden, the matter was adjourned to a date to be fixed.

Heavenly Descent (Race 1): shifted in near the 400m and made contact with I Taut I Saw resulting in I Taut I Saw becoming unbalanced. Raced wide without cover.

Bandipur (Race 2): began awkwardly resulting in rider Craig Williams striking his leg on the right hand side of the starting stall. Commenced to over-race approaching the 500m as the tempo eased, resulting in the colt having to be checked to avoid the heels of Windsor, before then shifting in abruptly and making heavy contact with the running rail and as a result lost considerable ground.

Stream Ahead (Race 3): connections advised would be ridden quieter in an effort to finish off; began awkwardly and settled at the rear of the field. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to be lame in the near foreleg and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Solar Duchess (Race 3): jumped away awkwardly and lost ground. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have a respiratory nasal discharge and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Payroll (Race 6): rider Steven Arnold stated the mare did not track truly rounding the home turn. A post race veterinary examination revealed the mare to have the thumps and will require a veterinary clearance prior to racing again.

Little White Cloud (Race 7): began awkwardly. Raced wide without cover. Steadied approaching the winning post to avoid the heels of Master Zephyr (GB), which shifted in slightly.

Survived (Race 7): raced tightly between Boom Time and Hipparchus (GB) approaching the 200m due to Hipparchus (GB) laying out. Had to be eased when weakening near the 100m to avoid the heels of Boom Time (Craig Williams) which shifted in; Craig Williams was reprimanded and advised to exercise more care. Rider Michael Dee reported he was unable to ride the gelding out to the line after having been eased near the 100m when racing behind Boom Time. Whilst accepting that Michael Dee eased at the 100m, Stewards notified him that he would be expected to ride his mount out hands and heels to the line over the last 50m when in similar circumstances in future.

Straturbo (Race 8): began awkwardly and made contact with Shakespearean Lass. Severely hung out rounding the home turn and became unbalanced near the 250m when making contact with Stellar Collision which was racing to its outside. During this incident the hindquarters of Straturbo were turned in. A warning will be placed on the gelding for hanging out.

Hard Romp (Race 8): raced wide without cover. Hampered passing the 300m when contacted on the hindquarters by Dan Zephyr which had been taken out.

Dan Zephyr (Race 8): raced wide without cover. Severely hampered passing the 300m when tightened for room between Hard Romp and Stellar Collision, which was taken out by Straturbo which was hanging out.
