Lees Calls On Yendall's Experience At Rosehill

3 minute read

Experience Victorian jockey Dean Yendall has been called up by trainer Kris Lees to hopefully keep problem child Brook Road on her best behaviour at Rosehill on Saturday.

Yendall will have his first ride for Lees on the mare in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m).

The booking was a late one when original choice Blake Shinn could not ride Brook Road at her 54kg minimum weight.

Yendall, who recently notched a G1 breakthrough on Yankee Rose in the Spring Champion Stakes at Randwick, is coming to Sydney to the ride Darren Weir stablemates Refulgent (ATC Cup) and Rageese (Festival Stakes) at Rosehill.

Brook Road was sent back to the trials after her antics at Randwick on November 1.

She dumped rider Johan Victoire leaving the enclosure, then jumped but refused to gallop at the start of her 1100m race and took no part.

Brook Road subsequently finished fourth to Shiraz in a 1000m barrier trial at Gosford.

“There were no problems at Gosford,” Lees said. “We gave her an easy trial to get her passed by stewards to return to the races.

“She will probably be giving them a start tomorrow but I won’t be surprised at all if she runs well.

“We know she doesn’t lack the necessary ability.”

Lees, who has been enjoying an exceptional winning streak, produced a well-bred colt at Gosford on Thursday who could easily make a name for himself in the future.

Time Out Of Mind was too classy for only four rivals in a Maiden Handicap (1100m) after winning two trials at the same track.

A son of Dream Ahead, Time Out Of Mind is a half-brother to former smart sprinter Rothesay, who is now at stud.

He was purchased for $100,000 as a yearling and hasn’t been rushed, not racing as a two-year-old.

Lees and his late father Max both trained Time Out Of Mind’s dam Schiaparelli at various stages during her career.

Lees has won 12 races since November 22, lifting his tally for the current season to 45 including 44 in NSW in the first four months.

He is third on the NSW premiership behind Chis Waller and John O’Shea with his strike rate ahead of his best season of 120 wins in 2014-15.
