Queanbeyan Race Preview - Tuesday December 13

3 minute read

There is nothing like that winning feeling for any sportsperson and it’s no different for apprentice jockey Rachel Hunt who lines up with three rides at Queanbeyan on Tuesday.

Hunt rode the first two winners at Canberra on Sunday and will partner Southern Gamble, Fire And Flood and Danz At Tiffany’s at Queanbeyan.

Hunt has ridden 14 winners this season and said everything was going well for her career at present after a long journey to get to where she is.

“It has taken a while to get going but since I have been with the Keith Dryden stable I feel I have been consistent,” she said.

The 27-year-old started out in Sydney with former top jockey Craig Carmody who “taught me a lot” then moved on to work for leading trainer Brett Thompson and Paul Theobald in the country.

The second year apprentice jockey is starting to make her mark with Dryden and other trainers making use of her two kilograms claim.

“I have to use a lot of lead weight to ride the horses with the big weights,” the 48 kilogram weighing jockey said.

Hunt has had an interesting journey in life.

She was born in the United States, grew up in New Zealand and has lived in Australia for some time.

Of Latin America heritage, Hunt is typical of many apprentice jockeys who has taken time to find her niche but it’s all starting to fall into place now.

She is hopeful her winning run can continue with one of her three rides.

Danz At Tiffany’s is trained by Dryden and Scott Collings and the stable has been churning out a constant stream of winners.

Southern Gamble has won two of his four starts this campaign and will have a weight advantage over last start Queanbeyan winner Uncle Gerry.

“Southern Gamble is a nice horse who is trained on the track,” Hunt said.

It’s a big week for Hunt who will have her first Sydney ride on Wednesday aboard Supa Vision at Warwick Farm.

“I’m pretty excited about that and can’t wait,” she enthused.
