Lees Worried By June Stakes Distance

3 minute read

Trainer Kris Lees is worried that the final 100 metres will be a test for his classy mare Felines in the June Stakes on Saturday.

Felines has to carry the topweight of 59kg in the $150,000 Listed sprint over 1100m as she strives to snare the 10th win of her career.

“She likes Randwick and has won four races there but al have been at 1000 metres,” Lees said.

“That extra 100 metres, especially with her weight, is going to be her biggest best.

“She is becoming a hard mare to place but I have no option but to run her.”

Lees contemplated sending Felines to Brisbane last Saturday for the Lightning Handicap where she had 60kg topweight but kept her at home for the June Stakes. Josh Parr has the mount.

Felines, with soft and heavy track wins to her credit, has been a wonderful performer for her trainer and owner Gerry Harvey. Aside from her nine victories, she has been placed on eight occasions from 29 starts.

She held on gamely under 57kg to win the Hawkesbury Rush (1100m) on April 29 and then finished fifth with 58.5kg in the Ortensia Stakes (1100m) at Scone on May 20.

Ortensia Stakes runner-up Deploy and third placed Dothraki subsequently finished first and second in the G2 Moreton Cup (1200m) at Doomben last Saturday.

Lees also runs Knit ‘N’ Purl and Star Reflection at the Randwick meeting and both are accomplished wet track performers.

The Monstar gave nothing else a chance, careering away over the last 200m to win by a wide margin over an ordinary field heavily depleted due to the heavy track. Drawing barrier four he strode to the lead from the outset yet one off the fence. Under Josh Adams, they led into the straight, adding pressure up the rise to break clear. With 200m left there were no challenges and they drew out to win easily. Near the last corner favourite Kudero sat wide and midfield, pulled wider past the 400m and ran on without chance for a distant second. Inz'n'out turned for home in third and battled away to hold his position from Wouldnt It Be Nice who was second at the 400m and plugged away for fourth.
