Wyong Cup Will Suit Local Stayer

3 minute read

Local stayer Get On The Grange is set to take on Chris Waller’s rising star Sayed for a second time in the $160,000 Wyong Gold Cup on September 1.

Waller has named imported Sayed as the horse to carry his hopes of winning the Listed Wyong Gold Cup (2100m) for a sixth time since 2010 but will find Wyong trainer Allan Kehoe ready and waiting to oppose him with the in-form Get On The Grange.

Sayed recorded a dominant 5.3 lengths win over Get On The Grange in a Benchmark 85 over 2400m at Randwick on August 5 but Kehoe is not deterred by that result.

Kehoe said Get On The Grange had a hard run at Randwick and should have finished closer to Sayed after his fine second to Supply And Demand in the Grafton Cup (2350m) on July 13.

“He finished second in the Grafton Cup and would have won if he’d had a bit of luck,” Kehoe said.

“The Wyong Cup looks like a good race for him and that will be his next start.

“He finished third in the race last year. He pulled up good after Randwick and is a happy horse.”

Sayed recorded back-to-back wins with his Randwick victory and took his record to five wins from just 11 starts in Sydney and Melbourne.

Sayed is following a path taken by many of Waller’s rising stayers in recent years with the Wyong Cup a stepping stone for the gelding to the Newcastle Cup (2350m) and G1 ATC Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick.

“This is the time to get up-and-coming horses with a light weight into the Newcastle and Wyong Cups,” Waller said.

“I love a horse like him with confidence. It's a big thing."

Sayed will be one of several horses the Waller stable will nominate for the Wyong Cup.

Waller’s winning run in the Wyong Cup began in 2010 with Hawk Island followed by The Verminator (2011), Wazn (2013), Multilateral (2014) and Beyond Thankful (2015).

The stable was denied another win last year when Sacred Master finished second behind the Kris Lees-trained Slow Pace with Get On The Grange third.
