2018 SYDNEY CUP – RACE ANALYSIS AND TIPS

Cismontane likely leads. Japanese Raider PRE STWICK makes his Australian debut. Has been thereabouts in the last two renewals of the Stayers Stakes at Nakayama over 3600m. They breed a superior stayer in the Land Of The Rising Sun and the closing sectionals he has reeled off in races over both 3400m and 3600m confirms that.

AUVRAY has found a new lease on life since arriving at the Freedman stable. Won the Sky High Stakes two back and was fair in the Tancred Stakes a fortnight ago. Meets rivals he clashed against in the Tancred between 3kg and 5kg better at the weights. Hard fit now and appeals down in the weights. Would appreciate any give in the track as well.

ALOFT won the Roy Higgins Quality on resuming. Comes here six weeks between runs however expecting it to be no issue. Profiles as a definite lightweight hope.

ALMANDIN is the class stayer of the field and has the weight to show for it. Was dominant in the Tancred Stakes a fortnight ago. CHARLES ROAD is dour and profiles as a lightweight hope.

Form Preview

Rising ten-year-old Who Shot Thebarman scored a welldeserved win in this race after finishing second twice previously. He settled back in 13th place in the large field, tracking a solid tempo before Blake Shinn moved him up (wide with cover) approaching the 600m. He put in his run, wide out, rounding the home turn, got to fourth at the 200m and finished gamely to grab victory on the post. New Zealandtrained stayer Zacada settled beyond midfield, got along the inner rounding the home turn and, after getting a great rails run, took the lead at the 200m only to be caught in the last few strides for second, beaten a nose. Another New Zealand-trained stayer Sir Charles Road raced ninth place, got along the rails coming to the home turn, briefly got to the front at the 300m and then fought on nicely under his limit weight (50kg) for third. Auvray had a good trip in eighth place on the rails, improved well (between runners) coming to the home turn, went to fourth at the 200m and battled on to hold that position, beaten just over a length. The favourite Almandin raced back in 12th place, improved (wide with cover) nearing the 600m but then just kept battling on under his top weight (57kg) for eighth, beaten just over five lengths.
