Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained three-year-old gelding Runaway put up a solid staying effort in winning here, his third win (with four placings) in 12 starts. He was smartly away and went to the front and then travelled well at a reasonable tempo before being challenged nearing the home turn. He then kept fighting on strongly and proved the superior stayer over the closing stages to win well. Lindsay Park-trained gelding Rezealient settled in the latter half of the field, improved along the inner, going to sixth at the home turn. He then got through to challenge at the 300m and kept battling well for a good second. Wolfe Tone had a good trip in seventh place on the rails, improved between runners coming to the home turn, got a split at the 200m and kept battling on nicely to take the minor placing. The favourite Astoria was ridden quietly and raced back about tenth, he improved behind runners coming to the home turn but failed to make any ground over the closing stages to finish (5.3 lengths) 12th, appearing tested by the 2800m journey.
