Damian Browne Gets More Rides For Godolphin

3 minute read

Strong Queensland rider Damian Browne has been handed another chance to add to his growing strike rate for the Godolphin stable at the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Trainer James Cummings has booked Browne to ride last year’s winner It’s Somewhat in the $350,000 Hollindale Stakes (1800m), giving the ex-Kiwi jockey the chance to land his second Group 2 in a week for Sheikh Mohammed.

Browne landed the ride on It’s Somewhat after his polished display to win last Saturday’s G2 Victory Stakes at Doomben on Godolphin’s gun sprinter Impending.

It was the second feature win for Browne on the stud-bound Impending, having ridden the sprinter to a win in the G2 Sir Byrne Hart Stakes at last year’s carnival before the 5YO won the G1 Stradbroke Handicap under Corey Brown.

Tye Angland rode It’s Somewhat when he won last year’s Holindale Stakes, a month after landing the G1 Doncaster Mil;e at Randwick under Zac Purton.

It’s Somewhat has had a different preparation this year, having raced just once since December for a first-up sixth in the G1 All-Aged Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on April 21 when the mount went to Tim Clark.

Browne, who made his name nationally by winning seven G1 races on Queensland’s champion sprinter Buffering, forged his association with Sheikh Mohammed’s stable in 2014 when Peter Snowden headed the Darley stable.

Snowden gave Browne the winning rides on Earthquake in the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude and G1 Blue Diamond Stakes and has since been used regularly by that trainer when he has sent horses to Brisbane with great success.

Cummings has followed suit since he took over the Godolphin stable last year and may have other rides for Brown at the Gold Coast on Saturday including Marble in the $125,000 Gold Coast Guineas, Moher in the $100,000 Gold Coast Cup and Manicure in the $150,000 Silk Stocking.

Browne has won the Silk Stocking twice for Sheikh Mohammed on the Snowden-trained pair Mascareri and Detour.
