In a keenly contested finish, Gary Portelli-trained gelding Ronstar fought back to win and remain unbeaten after two starts. After a quick beginning he settled nicely outside the leader (Countercurrent) at a moderate tempo (first 600m 37.53). He got to a narrow lead at the 200m and then kept fighting back to score by a half-head in a game win. Team Hawkes-trained colt Diplomatico, a $1,700,000 purchase at the 2017 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, raced in sixth place before making a wide move rounding the home turn. He then kept making ground, despite racing greenly for a late-closing second in a promising debut. Irish Bet raced fourth place, one out and one back, moved up at the home turn, challenged strongly at the 200m and kept battling on well for a closeup third. The favourite Galina raced in seventh place on the rails, got between runners at the 200m and kept making ground for fourth, beaten less than a length.
